5 Common Allergy Triggers to Look Out for

Air pollution may bring to mind images of smoke stacks and car exhaust, but indoor air can actually be much more polluted than outdoor air. Watch out for five of the most common allergy triggers in your San Antonio home and help control them with an air purification system.

Dust and Dust Mites

Dust is comprised of tiny skin particles, soil, insects, dust mite droppings and textile fibers. These organic materials irritate your allergies, but the dust mites that feed on dust are even worse. These microscopic insects thrive especially well in warm, humid conditions and love to hide in bedding and upholstery.

Mold

When mold spores land on damp surfaces, they begin to grow and send more spores into the air. Many people are allergic to mold spores, which cause sneezing and itchy, watery eyes. Some types of mold are even toxic and can make you very sick.

Pets

If being around dogs and cats makes you sneeze, it’s not actually their hair but a protein in their saliva that you’re allergic to. Pet dander is light and sticky, allowing it to cling to your shoes, clothes and hair. This allows some dander to enter your home even if you don’t have pets.

Cockroaches

Homes in the Southern U.S., including Texas, are the most likely to suffer from cockroach infestations. These common allergy triggers are the result of saliva, feces and exoskeletons left behind by these prolific insects.

Cigarettes

Secondhand smoke is a serious issue for people with asthma and allergies. Exposure to tobacco smoke can even increase a child’s risk of developing asthma. If you smoke, only do so outside, but also consider quitting for your own health.
