Three Simple Winter Preparation Tips

Winter in San Antonio may be mild compared with other cities in nothernstates, but you still need to make sure you stay warm. The following winter preparation tips can help to improve comfort and energy efficiency.

Make a More Air-Tight Home

Your air conditioning system will use more energy when your home is riddled with air leaks. You will undoubtedly increase energy efficiency and reduce spending on your utility bills by fixing these leaks.

Inspect all windows and doors for deteriorating caulk and weatherstripping, and replace them as needed. Next, use the smoke test to find drafts and air leaks you might have missed. Close all doors and windows, and power off fans and the air system. Burn an incense stick and hold close to each window and door. If the smoke is blown away from or drawn toward a spot along a window or door, that indicates a draft source.

Install a CO Detector

If you cook with a gas range, use a fireplace, or heat with a furnace, you need to be aware of carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning. With your house sealed for the winter, there is little opportunity for the odorless gas to escape. Buildup of CO indoors can lead to symptoms including fatigue, dizziness, malaise, and even death. Install CO detectors and test them as required.

Maintain Good IAQ

In a sealed home, air can quickly become stale and filled with dust, mold, and other particles. Stay ahead of any indoor air quality issues with these tips:

  • Vacuum and dust often.
  • Change the furnace or HVAC air filter monthly. Use a pleated filter with a MERV rating of 7 or better to capture fine particles and allergens.
  • Regularly clean air-return register and vents. Keep them clear of obstructions.
  • Add air-cleaning houseplants.
  • Run exhaust fans in the bathroom and kitchen to reduce humidity.
  • Ventilate while cooking or using a fireplace.
  • Clean any mold or mildew at first appearance with a vinegar-based solution.
