Tips to Save On Cooling Costs This Summer

Did you know that cooling our homes with air conditioners costs Americans nearly $11 billion each year? They also release about 100 million tons of carbon dioxide into the air annually, so what can you do to keep your home cool without breaking the bank and polluting the planet? By following a few of these tips, you’ll be on your way to eco-cooling this summer!

The first step is to reduce your body heat. You can do so in a number of ways including eating cool, staying hydrated and heading to the basement when the temperature rises. Dining on salads and sandwiches is a much better alternative than oven or stove-top cooking during the summer. Not only will you feel cooler, you’ll reduce the amount of heat inside your home that the oven or stove would give off. You can also plan outings to air conditioned buildings like the local library or the movie theater and this is a wonderful way to socialize with the members of your community.

A few other ways to keep your home cool this summer include changing your light bulbs to LEDs if you haven’t done so already and using fans inside your home. Incandescent bulbs produce a lot of heat while LEDs don’t, so switching them in rooms where you spend the most time can help make an impact. Have ceiling fans in your living room or bedroom? Turn them on while you’re in the room to circulate the air.
